A day in the life of a Postpartum Doula

A question I often get asked is what do I do during a postpartum support appointment with a family.
And the answer can really vary a lot. Depending on things like the time of day, how mum is feeling, what baby is doing and what needs to be done to support mum in her needs.
When I arrive to a family for a postpartum support appointment, I will normally sit down and chat with mum for the first 10-15 minutes, to catch up on how she is doing, if she has any concerns or questions and find out what she needs to feel supported. From there we will decide on what I will do during that time. Because of this, each visit to a family could look quite different and that's the great thing about it. I am there as a postpartum doula to support a mother in whatever she needs to feel nurtured so she can be the best mother to her baby.

Often I will tend to baby's needs to allow a mother to rest, take time for some selfcare or just to take a well deserved break. This could be assisting with bottle feeding, burping, settling, playing or helping to sleep.

If a mother needs to tend to her baby to feed then I will offer to help with other tasks that could help her feel nurtured, whether that be fixing her something to eat or drink, doing some tidying up around the house or tending to baby's laundry.
